EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The State Bar of California is seeking a seasoned executive who is a dynamic, energetic and highly accomplished leader to become the next Executive Director for the largest state bar in the United States with over 260,000 licensees. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director leads an organization with an annual budget of $242 million, 607 employees and offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The State Bar is the regulatory agency for licensing, regulation and discipline of attorneys; the advancement of ethical and competent practice of law; and support of efforts for greater access to, and inclusion in, the legal system. All practicing lawyers in California must be active licensees.

The State Bar's Executive Director is appointed by and is directly accountable to the Board of Trustees. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the organization fulfills its mission and operationalizes the specific goals of the current strategic plan in accordance with statutory requirements, Board policy and direction. Ideally, candidates for this position will possess comparable executive management and leadership experience gained working for a public corporation, large government regulatory agency/department, judicial enterprise or local government.

The State Bar seeks candidates with outstanding organizational management, people leadership and relationship building skills, familiarity with the legal profession and a commitment to organization's mission. Ideally candidates will possess a juris doctorate and/or a master's degree in business or public administration with significant experience leading both administrative and operational functions. Candidates must possess outstanding interpersonal and team building skills and have a minimum of ten years of senior-level management responsibility including experience working with a board.
