Challenges of handling requests for police personnel records in an evolving landscape
Agencies must decide whether to disclose records that do not clearly fall into the categories of mandated disclosure and should notify the officers involved if they choose to release them.

Throughout the past six years, public access to police personnel records has been greatly expanded in order to promote transparency in policing. Legislative changes to Penal Code Section 832.7, and court decisions interpreting these changes, have created new challenges for law enforcement agencies throughout the state as they receive California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests for police personnel records related to misconduct and use of force.
