Alternative dispute resolution is a vital part of the success of our modern judicial system. In every facet of law and society, arbitrators, mediators and private judges are helping people and businesses achieve new and innovative solutions to problems old and new -- often faster and at less cost. California has long been a leader in ADR thanks, in large part, to the talented women and men featured in this special issue. Their leadership and consensus building skills have made them true pioneers. Every day in offices across the state they forge consensus and issue rulings that help our court system and our society be more productive and peaceful. For that we owe them a debt of gratitude.
