The greatest year in the history of American films was 1939. "Gone with the Wind" won the Academy Award that year, beating out films such as "The Wizard of Oz," "Stagecoach," "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" and "Ninotchka." A personal favorite of mine from 1939 is "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."
