Some firms welcome in-house counsel back into their arms

Faced with a competitive lateral partner market, law firms are beginning to bolster their ranks with in-house legal practitioners because of their numerous business contacts and valuable client-side experience.

When Timothy L. Alger joined Google as deputy general counsel in 2008 from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP, the intellectual property and technology litigator thought he would be at the search engine company for the rest of his career.


But his love for the courtroom led him back to law firm life, and in August he landed as a partner at the Palo Alto office of Perkins Coie LLP.
