Give 'Em a Break

Dicta Column - By Richard J. Simmons - California law requires law firms to provide their employees meaningful opportunities for rest and meal periods. In addition, the law recently was changed to create penalties for violations of these rules. To comply with these changes, firms should monitor meal and rest period rules, make certain that employees take the required time off and obtain acknowledgments from employees verifying that they have received the time off to which they are entitled.
