Balancing Hopes and Dreams

The celebration and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday this month coincided with the beginning of trial in Grutter v. Bollinger, a challenge to race-based affirmative action at the University of Michigan Law School. The Michigan case demonstrates the need for educational institutions to retain affirmative action as necessary to offset the discrimination and bias that pervades traditional admissions policies.
