Cutbacks on stenographers in LA hits home

The first day of attorneys being required to hire their own court reporters for civil trials in Los Angeles went off with some minor bumps along the way, as well as access to justice concerns voiced by legal experts.

LOS ANGELES - Recent cutbacks to courtroom stenographers were felt firsthand by everyone waiting in Department 38 at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse on Tuesday morning.


When the two opposing lawyers on a wrongful eviction trial realized no stenographer would be provided by the court, they were sent scrambling to find a court reporter who could transcribe the proceedings.
