Rights Issue Began at S.F.'s Black Cat

Column By Philip Carrizosa - SAN FRANCISCO - In the 1950s through 1963, there was a bar and restaurant in San Francisco's North Beach that catered to gay men. The bar, the Black Cat, was one of the first to openly welcome homosexuals and featured a gay drag revue starring Jose Sarria, who performed campy versions of operatic arias. The bar closed each night with Sarria leading a sing-along of "God Save Us Nelly Queens."
