Supreme Court historical society names contest winner

The California Supreme Court Historical Society named Jonathan Mayer, a 2013 graduate of Stanford Law School, as the first-place winner of the society's 2013 student writing competition. The competition, initiated and conducted by society board member Selma Moidel Smith, evaluated unpublished legal writings on a broad range of issues — entrants could write on any topic in California legal history from 1846 to the present. Entries were judged by a panel of legal historians. Mayer was welcomed to the chambers of state Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, where he was congratulated by the chief justice, Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar and society representatives. — Ben Adlin
