Labor Department OKs unpaid law student interns for pro bono projects

Law firms may safely hire law students as unpaid interns to work on pro bono projects, according to a letter from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Law firms apparently may safely hire law students as unpaid interns to work on pro bono projects, according to a letter from the U.S. Department of Labor.


The letter signed by the department's solicitor general, M. Patricia Smith, said such unpaid pro bono work would not violate the federal Fair Labor Standards Act in most cases.
