Prison is too costly for some crimes

The cost to put petty thieves in prison is too high. It is too high in terms of the types of people who, very soon, may be released because our prisons are too full. By Richard La Fianza

Would you spend $50,000 for a toaster? Before you say no, you should probably be told that you already have. In fact, $50,000 would be a bargain compared to what the state is spending. In particular, every time our state sends someone to prison, depending on whom you believe, it costs from $50,000 to $100,000 a year to keep them in custody.
