Winning lawyers in civil rights cases can collect fees that exceed the sum recovered by their clients, a 9th Circuit panel held Monday in reversing U.S. District Judge Otis D. Wright II of Los Angeles.
Wright slashed fees following settlement of eight civil rights suits alleging misconduct by the city of Maywood, its police department and several officials. The terms gave plaintiffs $500,000 with a $1,025,000 cap on fees. Wr...
