Veterans Get Their Day in Court

The matters heard in the courtroom - driving under the influence, drug infractions, assault - are routine, but the defendants are not. Every Tuesday afternoon, Judge Wendy Lindley's docket is devoted to cases of military veterans who have been diverted to her special veterans court.

SANTA ANA - It's clear the minute Wendy Lindley calls for order that the judge presides over a different kind of court.

Defendants are called clients, errant cell phone rings are ignored and pauses between cases are frequently peppered with applause.

"Let's give him some encouragement," Lindley, an Orange County Superior Court judge, said after one defendant gave an update.
