Justices Rule That Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese Owns Parish Property

When worshippers in a parish split from the mother church, who keeps the steeple? In the case of breakaway Newport Beach conservative Episcopalians upset over the ordination of a gay bishop in New Hampshire, the California Supreme Court decided Monday that the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles still owns the dissidents’ church property.
