Secret Settlements About Products Put Public in Peril

The secret settlements' hall of shame keeps growing. Starting in the 1930s, asbestos manufacturers kept hidden the health risk of their product. In the '80s, Bic tried to muzzle evidence that its pocket lighters unexpectedly exploded. And most recently, Firestone and Ford spent nine years hiding a growing calamity. Staying quiet about dangerous products, such as cracking heart valves and faulty baby car seats, puts the public in peril.
