SAN FRANCISCO - Bench officers who participate in the state's assigned judges program are being asked to work without pay for at least one day in May and June to help bridge the judicial branch's budget shortfall.
Comprised of 400 judges and justices, most of them retired, the program places judges in temporary assignments to fill in when there are vacancies, illnesses or disqualifications, or if a court is backlogged and needs extra help.
