Cravath Swaine: IBM Plans to Buy Database Subsidiary From Informix

Computer giant IBM has agreed to buy the database business of Informix Corp. for $1 billion in cash. IBM, based in Armonk, N.Y., is the world's top provider of computer hardware. The company makes a broad range of computers, including personal computers, notebooks, mainframes and network servers. It also develops software (ranking No. 2 behind Microsoft Corp.) and peripherals and derives 35 percent of sales from its service arm.
