The social media dilemma has become increasingly complex as globalization puts lawyers at risk of breaches of confidentiality and other missteps.

"How many of you in the room have never used or interacted with social media?" Los Angeles-based Bryan Cave LLP partner John W. Amberg asked an audience Thursday at the State Bar's annual meeting in San Jose.

One woman raised her hand and cited "philosophical reasons" for the choice.
