High Court Limits Patent Protections

WASHINGTON - In a major legal shake-up that weakens protections for patent holders, the U.S. Supreme Court made it easier Monday for litigants to bring successful patent challenges, ruling that a specialized federal appeals court used too narrow an approach in deciding whether a patent is obvious and therefore invalid.
