Cities Consider Taxing Marijuana Clubs

New and increased marijuana taxes raise potential legal issues for California cities trying to raise needed income.

Voters in 10 cash-strapped cities approved new or higher taxes on medical marijuana last week, and Los Angeles could be next. But some lawyers think the taxes could face challenges under a number of legal theories.


Voters in Albany, Berkeley, La Puente, Long Beach, Rancho Cordova, Richmond, Sacramento, Stockton and San Jose all approved new gross-receipts taxes ranging from 2.5 percent to 5 percent....
