BY DARREN MOEN When people think of individual retirement accounts, they think of mutual funds, stocks and bonds. Few people are aware an IRA can also invest in real estate. Along with traditional investments, an IRA can invest directly in raw land, commercial property and rental units without taking an early distribution, which requires paying income taxes plus a 10-percent penalty. IRA real estate income is earned on a tax-deferred basis.
