Each year, Michael O'Callaghan competes in one of the West Coast's most rigorous rough-water races, the 1.5 mile Alcatraz Shark Fest. The swimmers face strong tides, the frigid water of the San Francisco Bay and the specter of sharks. Like O'Callaghan, many of the 500 swimmers don't don wet suits.
