Feds, attorneys dispute whether undocumented lawyer could legally work

Even if the state Supreme Court rules an undocumented immigrant can be a lawyer, whether he could legally obtain work remains a gray area.

Could an undocumented immigrant earn a living as a lawyer if he's admitted to practice law in California?


It depends on whom you ask.


The federal government says Sergio C. Garcia could never legally earn money as an attorney. The State Bar and other advocates for Garcia's bid to become a lawyer say the government is mistaken.
