Some say revamped LA federal public corruption unit is off to a good start

Two years after being revived by U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr., the Central District's public corruption and civil rights section is just about ready for its close-up. It's a work in progress, observers say, but a promising one.

LOS ANGELES - In 2008, then-U.S. Attorney for the Central District Thomas P. O'Brien sparked controversy by disbanding the office's unit dedicated to prosecuting public corruption.


The move drew fast criticism, including from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who wrote a letter to Department of Justice officials expressing her "serious concerns about the potential impact of this change."...
