Both Sides See Win in Police-Shooting Verdict

LOS ANGELES - Charles Beatty's civil rights lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles seemed like a slam-dunk. After all, the Los Angeles police officer who shot the unarmed 68-year-old retiree in the back after a traffic stop had pleaded no contest to a felony charge and is serving a five-year prison term.
