Zip Code Cases Spur Legislation

A Fresno lawmaker is floating legislation he says is necessary to clear up questions following a California Supreme Court case that says it's illegal for retailers to request and record ZIP codes during credit card transactions.

Concerned that a recent state Supreme Court decision leaves ambiguity around the issue of retailers asking customers for their ZIP codes in connection with credit card purchases, a Central Valley lawmaker is sponsoring a bill aimed at spelling out when retailers can do so.


The legislation, AB 1219, introduced by Assemblyman Henry Perea, D-Fresno, was passed by the Assembly Judiciary Committee Tuesday...
