Split Court Upholds Death Penalty

LOS ANGELES - A closely divided state Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the death penalty for a Los Angeles man convicted in a 1989 robbery-killing in Pomona, rejecting a defense argument that the jury should have been instructed that they could find Alfredo Valdez guilty of a lesser charge.
