Ahead of trial, Compton settles voting rights suit

The city of Compton has settled a lawsuit filed by two women who allege the city's at-large voting system discriminates against Latinos by diluting their voting power.

The city of Compton has settled a lawsuit filed by two women who allege the city's at-large voting system discriminates against Latinos.


Compton, once home to a large African-American majority, is now two-thirds Latino but has never elected a Latino to its city council because the citywide elections diluted that demographic's vote, plaintiffs Felicitas Gonzalez and Flora Ruiz allege.
