SF takes step toward civil Gideon

A new ordinance passed Tuesday by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is a small step towards providing civil representation to indigent litigants.

When San Francisco resident Herlinda Hernandez faced eviction last year, no lawyer would take her case, and few attorneys offered advice on how to represent herself.


"Every firm I reached out to shut the door on me. They all said the same thing," she said. "'Sorry, we don't give legal advice. Good luck.'"
