Surrogacy Agency Sued Over Funds

A class action has been filed in Alameda County Superior Court against the now-defunct company SurroGenesis, which allegedly stole millions of dollars paid to it by couples hoping to set up surrogate births.

SAN FRANCISCO - When Beth Mardones found out she couldn't give birth, she and her husband decided to try out a surrogate mother.

The couple, who live in a Chicago suburb, saved for two years, they say. In 2007 they allegedly paid about $25,000 to the Modesto-based surrogacy agency SurroGenesis. By March, the Mardones had lost their money and there was no baby on the way, they allege.
