Balance of Costs May Change in Divorce Court

Alan T. Schroeder Jr., who at times represented himself during a 15-year-long divorce case, won a significant decision that could affect thousands of cases in California’s family courts.

After a divorce that dragged on for 15 years over child custody, draining his energy and bank account, Alan Schroeder was slapped with yet another bill. The judge ordered him to pay his ex-wife's legal fees. This, when Schroeder could not afford his own lawyer and was forced to represent himself.
