HP Damages Ruling May Be Good News for Other Tech Firms

Federal Circuit Judge Randall Rader ruled that the original $184 million award for patent infringement unfairly included royalties on components not covered by the claimed invention. Rader cut the award to $53 million.

A federal judge has slashed a $184 million patent infringement verdict against Palo Alto-based Hewlett-Packard Co. by more than two-thirds, concluding plaintiff Cornell University's damage claim went far beyond the technology in the invention.
