A number of disruptive legal technologies are emerging that will directly challenge and sometimes even replace the traditional work of lawyers.

The legal profession is in its own turmoil. Major international law firms are dramatically reducing their headcounts, while many smaller legal businesses are struggling to survive.

When clients are doing fewer deals, lawyers tend to suffer. There are notable exceptions - litigators tend to keep busy in a recession, as do insolvency experts. But generally, the economic storm is bad news for the legal fraternity.
