Legal Services to take a hit while patent office flourishes

Congress is on the verge of slashing spending on legal services for the poor even as it devotes a swell of new federal dollars to processing patents.

WASHINGTON - Congress is on the verge of slashing spending on legal services for the poor even as it devotes a swell of new federal dollars to processing patents.


A spending package approved by the House on Thursday calls for a 14 percent budget cut for Legal Services Corp., the quasi-governmental group that distributes grants to local legal aid groups, including 11 in California.
