High court: felony defendants must come to court or forfeit bail

In a unanimous decision, the state Supreme Court interpreted the state penal code and clarified that, absent a written waiver or a "sufficient excuse" determined by a trial court judge, felony defendants must always appear in court.

A defendant facing a felony charge is required to attend all court hearings related to the alleged criminal act or risk forfeiting bail, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday.
