The tiny delta smelt is just a couple of inches long and it swims only in California waters, but it scored a big national win Friday at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The tiny delta smelt is just a couple of inches long and swims only in California waters, but it scored a big national win Friday at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.


A circuit panel voted 3-0 that despite the smelt's miniscule size, lack of commercial value and single-state habitat, it still merits protection under the federal Endangered Species Act.
