We shouldn't treat children as chattel

A recent decision of the 2nd District Court of Appeal deserves careful consideration and raises serious questions regarding whether the current state of the law sufficiently protects children's best interests.

The Jan. 13 decision of the 2nd District Court of Appeal in In re C.M., 2015 DJDAR 446, deserves careful consideration. Assuming it is correctly decided - and it may not be - In re C.M. raises serious questions regarding whether the current state of the law sufficiently protects children's best interests.

C.M. is a 14-year-old girl who grew up living with her mother, maternal half-sister, and maternal grandparents in the grandparents' apartment in Southern California...
