Pro bono push hindered by absence of associates

Even as government officials, law firms, and local bar associations push for more pro bono help to represent clients, they are hampered by the smaller number of associates available to do the work.

As they climb out of the recession, law firms' pro bono commitments continue to drop or remain stagnant, according to a recent study. Lawyers and nonprofits are now worried that this may represent a new normal. The army of associates that once populated law firms - and were trained on pro bono cases - are gone for good, many fear.
