Supreme Court win for small fish leaves a big water fight

A 9th Circuit ruling protecting tiny fish and upholding water pumping restrictions from the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta will stand.

In a victory for the federal government and the tiny delta smelt, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a case in which a phalanx of California farms and cities were fighting water supply cutbacks aimed at protecting the imperiled fish. But as the state enters its fourth year of drought, there is little sign that fighting over the water supply will end soon.
