Safeway settles case accusing it of violating hazardous waste laws

Grocery store chain will pay $9.87 million to settle lawsuit filed by district attorneys around the state.

Grocery chain Safeway Inc. will pay close to $10 million to settle claims it violated hazardous waste laws in stores throughout California. District attorneys from 43 counties and two city attorneys announced Monday they had finalized a settlement with the Pleasanton-based company after accusing it of failing to safely handle, store and dispose of toxic products such as batteries, house cleaners and medication. ...
