We Need a Ban on Sale of Social Security Numbers

The article titled "Credit Bureaus Fight ID-Theft Legislation" (Legal Beat, April 13), which describes the efforts of credit bureaus to thwart passage of consumer-protection measures that might curtail profits from the sale of consumers' personal information, including Social Security numbers, highlights the plight of consumers left entirely on their own in the fight against identity theft.
