Reversing Diversity

Forum Column - By William C. Kidder and Susan K. Serrano - In Grutter v. Bollinger, the landmark ruling upholding affirmative action at the University of Michigan Law School, the Supreme Court held that diversity was a compelling interest permitting the consideration of race and ethnicity in higher-education admissions. The court declared, "It is necessary that the path to leadership be visibly open to talented and qualified individuals of every race and ethnicity."
