ABA to discuss nonlawyer partners

A report on nonlawyers owning parts of law firms has sparked renewed interest in the the controversial topic and will be mulled by an ABA group at a meeting later this week.

Will nonlawyers in the United States ever be able to own law firms?


So far, outside of Washington, D.C., which approved a rule in 1991 allowing the practice, no other jurisdiction has followed through.


But the topic has started to draw new interest in the legal community after an American Bar Association group released a report on the topic and drafted a letter seeking comment on the proposal...
