Supreme Court extends 6th Amendment protections in plea bargaining context

A divided U.S. Supreme Court handed down a pair of decisions Wednesday embracing the central role that plea bargaining plays in the nation's criminal justice system.

WASHINGTON - A divided U.S. Supreme Court handed down a pair of decisions Wednesday embracing the central role that plea bargaining plays in the nation's criminal justice system.


In the rulings, the court extended the right to effective assistance of counsel during plea bargaining to situations when deals are rejected in favor of trial, or expire and leave the defendant with worse options.
