Justices to Reconsider Ruling Reducing Penalties for Aliens
A federal appeals court has voted to reconsider an important precedent that allowed trial judges to reduce plea-bargained sentences as a means of eliminating "gross sentencing disparities" between California's four federal prosecution districts. Prison sentences in Los Angeles, for example, are as much as three times the length of terms for the same conduct in other districts, such as San Diego or Sacramento.
