Professors fight transfer of bones to tribes in court

Three University of California professors have filed a writ of mandate trying to prevent the transfer of human bones to a group of Native American tribes.

Nearly four decades ago, scientists made a rare find on a La Jolla bluff near the Pacific Ocean: human bones that date back almost 10,000 years.


Since the 1976 discovery, a group of Native American tribes known as Kumeyaay Nation has asked for the remains, which are currently held at the University of California, San Diego, claiming they are linked to Kumeyaay ancestors.
