2015 record year for exonerations

Experts attribute rise in part to prosecutors’ increased use of conviction review units

A record number of exonerations - 149 - occurred in 2015, according to the University of Michigan Law School's National Registry of Exonerations.

The exonerated had served, on average, more than 14 years in prison. Most exonerations were those convicted of homicide, 58 in total. Second was those convicted of drug possession - 47 were exonerated, 42 of which had pled guilty in Harris County, ...
