Placing Strict Standards on Contestants Isn't a Form of Discrimination

By Heather Whitestone McCallum I will never forget the quote I studied daily before I competed in the 1995 Miss America Pageant. Colleen Kay Hutchins, Miss America 1952, gave her timeless advice. "Tell the girl who wins the title this year to remember that she only borrows the crown for a year. Tell her she doesn't create it, and tell her every Miss America who has gone before has added to it a jewel. Tell her she is taking on a great responsibility.
