L.A. Will Stop Calling Police on Mentally Ill

Officials with the Department of Mental Health pledged Thursday to stop relying on police for emergency calls involving the mentally ill and resume sending out county mental health staff by next month.

LOS ANGELES - Officials with the Department of Mental Health pledged Thursday to stop relying on police for emergency calls involving the mentally ill and resume sending out county mental health staff by next month.

To do so, the department is negotiating a new plan with county hospitals to allow county workers to deliver mental patients to emergency rooms even if beds are full, officials said.
